Kelly:  The planner/blogger/
academic teacher of this traveling tribe, I was raised in the USA and developed a love of international travel at a young age from holiday journeys with my family.  Loving the freedom, adventure, and just that feeling of “other worldliness” that only travel create, I pursed many opportunities to travel abroad in my teen and twenties.    I found the most life changing trips were the longer ones;  a 9 month travel adventure around-the-world my junior year in college with "IHP-Global Ecology" transformed the way I saw myself in the world.    What circumstances could make for a better experience; youth, an open mind, and true immersion in cultures?    I shaped my life after college graduation, so that I could work and live frugally in the Hawaii and then head off on another adventure.  In 1998, I joined a marine research ship, RV Heraclitus, in Indonesia and travelled to remote areas of South East Asia, while exploring the coral reefs and cultures.   It is on this ship that I met Kiko…...

Kiko:  The best mix of MacGyver / Superman/ Tarzan, he is the one you want to have with you on a deserted island.  Born and raised in a small fishing village in Venezuela, he is the second youngest in his family of 10.  He grew up making his own toys, boats from oil barrels and catcher mitts from milk cartons.  Fish was breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  From his father he learned the art of fishing and boat building.  In 1992, at the age of 16, the RV Heraclitus, an international ship of dreams,  came to his town for repairs, and he immediately hit it off with the crew and was asked to join.  He travelled the world, learned English, experienced exotic cultures, and made lifelong friends around the planet; truly experiencing life to the fullest.  In 1998, our lives converged when I joined the same ship...

Together….  After an amazing  year together with a great crew on RV Heraclitus, we yearned to travel just the two of us.   Departing the ship in 2000, we continuing with my tried and true pattern of working/saving and then heading off to travel, this time exploring Hawaii, South America , Europe, and the South Pacific.  In 2002 we decided to get married and create a life for ourselves on Kauai.  Zuki was born in 2004 and Yoda in 2007 (obviously aliases to provide some antinomy to the kids while giving them the fun of  devising their own cool- kid names for the year.) .  There was never a doubt that we would one day travel the world with our children.   We started planning in ernest for a “future big trip” in 2009.

Zuki: Age 9 at the start of the trip, she will be turning 10 in August 2014.  A beauty with a tom-boy attitude,  she is a natural artist, an avid reader, and has a great appreciation for humor.  She has a special connection with animals and is looking forward to studying all the creatures she encounters on our world travels.

Yoda: Age 6 turning 7 halfway through the trip, he is an adventure seeking, outdoor loving, energy ball, who likes to build whatever he can with whatever he has and likes the idea of hunting  and fishing, both of which he hopes to do on this trip.  He prefers the outdoors and seems to attract dirt no matter where he may be.
